Stay Safe in Atlanta

Crime has always been a problem for Atlanta and the residents who live there. Crime is something that residents of Atlanta have tried to stop. They've rallied. They've sent complaint letters to city officials. They have set up websites demanding a solution. The residents of Atlanta insist that they should not be forced to "just accept" that crime is a part of their daily lives.

City Council meetings have been held to talk about the Crime levels in Atlanta and city officials have told residents that they are working around the clock to figure out a solution to lowering the crime rate in the city. So far, however, most Atlantans are not seeing the crime levels drop. In fact, officials say that in spite of their best efforts crime has actually risen.

So how do you make sure that you stay safe as a resident of Atlanta? How do you reduce the crime levels in your neighborhood? Here are some of the tips that have been suggested by safety experts:

1. If you can help it, don't travel alone, especially at night. You are less likely to be attacked if you are walking or driving with another person. The larger your group, the less likely you are to be a victim of a crime.

2. Always have some kind of easily accessible noise maker with you. It can be a whistle; it can be an air horn or something in between but make sure you have something loud and something distinct. It is best if it does not rely on air to operate because you don't want to lose your attention grabbing strategy if you get the wind knocked out of you.

3. Carry mace or pepper spray and make sure you know how to use it. You can purchase key chain pepper spray at most outdoor enthusiast stores.

4. Always have your keys ready as you walk to and from your car. Criminals are more likely to attack if you have to stop and fumble around in your pockets or bag for your keys. When you carry your keys, let the biggest key on your keychain stick up between your middle and ring fingers, this easily turns into a weapon you can use to protect yourself if you get attacked.

5. Be constantly aware of your surroundings. You are less likely to be attacked if the attacker thinks you'll be able to describe him/her to police later. Another reason Atlanta residents should always be aware of their surroundings is that they are less likely to notice a potential attacker or dangerous situation. Criminals prey on the distracted and unfocused.

These are just five simple tips that are repeated to the residents of Atlanta at every crime stoppers meeting. What is your favorite safety tip? Does your neighborhood have a neighborhood watch? Have you figured out a way to safely avoid an attack that isn't mentioned here? Staying home is not an option. Staying safe while out and about is what you need to learn how to do.
